We welcome Dr. Todd Chace "home" to Englewood Community Hospital, after his service in Afghanistan with the Army National Guard! Dr. Chace served as Brigade Surgeon for the 168th Engineer Brigade; Task Force Storm. The base is located near Sharana, Afghanistan, at an elevation of 7,500 ft. During his deployment, Dr. Chace was awarded the Bronze Star, for meritorious service, in recognition of his leadership in developing a guidance protocol and tracking process for Minimal Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI), impacting environmental improvements in waste management, and initiating a health promotion campaign with weekly "health tips" for the soldiers.
At Englewood Community Hospital, Dr. Chace presented a plaque and an American flag that was flown over his camp to Mary Ann Conroy, CEO, in recognition of the hospital's support during his deployment. He also presented a letter and plaque to Sherri Wetherill, Cardiopulmonary Director, for her part in organizing the boxes of goodies the hospital sent to him, which he was able to share with many of his fellow soldiers. He reported that the "Peeps" in his care packages were so popular that the soldiers were inspired to arm wrestle for them!
Dr. Chace has been appointed to the position of State Surgeon for the Florida National Guard by the Adjutant General for the state of Florida, Major General Burnett. In this position, Dr. Chace will have the responsibility to oversee National Guard medical readiness for the state of Florida.
With headquarters in St. Augustine, the Florida National Guard is the oldest National Guard in the US, tracing its heritage back to 1565, the year the Spanish founders of St. Augustine organized their first company of citizen-Soldiers. Florida's militia has defended local communities for over 440 years. The Mission of the Florida National Guard is to provide military units and personnel ready to support United States national security objectives; to protect life and property; preserve peace, order and public safety; and to contribute to valuable national, state, and local community service programs.
To honor Dr. Chace, Englewood Community Hospital will fly his American flag on Independence Day, Saturday, July 4, 2009. Present for the unfurling of the American flag is Mary Ann Conroy, CEO, Dr. Todd Chace and his wife, Carol, and Tom Hinck, Chairman of the Hospital Board, accompanied by proud members of the hospital staff.
