Port Charlotte Symphony founder passes

Barbara Ann Safron, 84, passed away Monday, Oct. 1, at her residence.

Born in Indianapolis to the late Paul and Grace Davis, she was preceded in death by her son, Gene Safron, and her sisters, Carol Buss and Nancy Kynerd.

Survivors include her husband, Elwood Philip Safron; sons, Philip Paul Safron and wife Maureen H. Safron, and John Elwood Safron and wife, Bridgett Ann Safron, all of Port Charlotte; sister, Janie Bonner of California; grandchildren, Christopher Safron, Alicia Rebol, John Gray, Kyke Safron, Shawn Safron, and Justin Safron; and three great grandchildren.

Raised in Miami, Safron was a graduate of the University of Miami where she played clarinet in the marching band. She started the first band at the St. Charles Borremo School in Port Charlotte wher she also was principal and taught science and math.

She was the founder of the Port Charlotte Symphony and active with the Brevard Music Center. Her passions were marching band and tennis. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brevard.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Moody-Connolly Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda.
